Human Losses Suffered by Serbia and Montenegro (SRJ)

Over the course of documenting the human losses suffered by Serbia and Montenegro, a total of 8,832 documents have been collected and processed to date, 1,143 of which are statements taken from witnesses and families of SRJ servicemen and policemen who lost their lives or disappeared in connection with the wars in Croatia and B&H. On the basis of these documents (in particular, statements given by witnesses and victims’ families), a total of 2,133 victims have been registered as such in the human losses database (including 1,989 members of the SRJ armed forces whose death or disappearance in connection with the war has been confirmed by multiple sources. The status of the remaining 144 reported war victims is currently being verified, i.e. in each individual case.an investigation is underway examining citizenship records and information about the circumstances of the alleged death or disappearance in connection with the wars in Croatia and B&H.

On the basis of the 1,143 statements given by witnesses and members of victims’ families, complete personal records have been established for a total of 1,144 SRJ servicemen and policemen who died or went missing in connection with the wars in Slovenia (12), Croatia (764) and B&H (368).

Over the course of 2014, two HLC’s researchers interviewed 187 witnesses and relatives of killed or missing members of the SRJ armed forces, on the basis of which they obtained records of 121 SRJ servicemen who lost their lives or disappeared in connection with the war in Croatia and 66 military casualties (victims) of the war in B&H. Over the past year, the researchers also conducted verifications of the status of 153 persons listed as SRJ military casualties in obituaries and monuments in Serbia, establishing that 69 of them were indeed military victims of SRJ nationality, and that 38 of them died in the war in Croatia, while the remaining 31 died in the war in B&H. Over the same period, the researchers collected and processed 949 documents that mention a total of 857 SRJ military victims of the wars in Croatia and B&H.

The records in the database also show that 348 members of the Yugoslav National Army (JNA) and SerbianMUP lost their lives in and around Vukovar, while 85 died in the area of Dubrovnik.
